An Evening of Chamber Music at Knox

Join us at Knox for a special evening of chamber music featuring Kristin Ranshaw (horn), Sebastien Malette (Bassoon), Connor Stairs (Saxophone), Hayden Landolt (Saxophone), and Hanna Williamson (Violin). This recital will showcase a variety of musical works and styles, featuring Mozart's Horn Quintet with Kristin as a soloist, and Glick’s Suite Hebraique no. 5.

The program will offer something for everyone, with an engaging selection of music performed by a talented group of musicians in an intimate recital setting. Whether you are a longtime music lover or simply looking for an enjoyable evening out, this promises to be a memorable event filled with beautiful music and community spirit.

This concert is especially significant as it marks one of Kristin's final performances at Knox before being posted away from Ottawa in the fall. We hope you will join us at 7:00PM on Thursday July 9th!

Admission is by donation, with all proceeds supporting One Roof for All, a fundraiser to assist in the purchase of a new roof for Knox. We look forward to welcoming as many people as possible for this special evening of music.

Bios

Matt Gower has been involved in the Ottawa music community for over two decades. His songwriting incorporates folk, alt-country and old-time music weaved between timeless lyrics and dynamic vocals. Over the years Matt has performed with garage-folk band Capital Grass and the No Men and folk duo Fathom the Sea around the National Capital Region and Western Quebec. Throughout Matt’s musical journeys, a constant thread has held true: nothing carries more weight than connecting with an audience through the power of song.

We provide gender-neutral washrooms. We have one wheelchair accessible washroom. There is no wheelchair ramp. Once inside, the whole cafe floor is flat, with the exception of our small room to the side, which is a small step down.

We are licensed to provide alcohol, but serve a variety of non-alcoholic options.

OK Naledi is a high-energy, Afro-Fusion music group based in Ottawa.

Rooted in Motswana heritage, OK Naledi weaves raw emotion and vibrant sounds into stories of heartbreak, love, queerness, family and adulthood. Their songwriting is deeply personal, shaped by the experience of living in a Western context while carrying the roots and rhythms of southern Africa. OK Naledi blends traditional sub-Saharan guitar lines, warm bassy grooves, and movement-inspiring beats to create a sound that’s both genre-defiant and soul-stirring. Their lyricism is intimate and poetic, offering listeners a space to feel seen, held, and moved.

Since emerging in 2022, OK Naledi has carved a fast-rising path in the Canadian music scene, earning major festival appearances, several award nominations, and provincial arts funding. Their music video “do you feel” was selected for the 2023 Los Angeles Queer Film Festival, and their debut full-length album launched with a sold-out release show at the National Arts Centre.

More than a music project, OK Naledi is a love letter to becoming—an evolving body of work that invites audiences to feel deeply, dance freely, and dream beyond borders. New music is always on the horizon.

Music on the Canal
The concert takes place on the Rideau Canal beginning near the NAC, under the Rideau Street Bridge. The musician-packed boat will arrive at Lansdowne Park approximately 45 minutes later and then return back. The sets run approximately 90 minutes.

Tips and tricks for enjoying Music on the Canal
We recommend you find a spot along the canal, not at the starting point at the NAC, where you will be able to hear the boat as it approaches and then continues down the canal. Pack a picnic, bring some folding chairs and let the music come to you!

If you want more than a glimpse, you can cycle along to keep up as the boat moves faster than walking pace.

OK Naledi est un groupe d’afro-fusion ultravitaminé.

Puisant dans l’héritage du Botswana, ce groupe d’Ottawa transforme émotions brutes et rythmes éclatants en récits puissants autour de l’amour, des peines de cœur, de l’identité queer, de la famille et du passage à l’âge adulte. Dans cette même énergie, l’écriture se déploie à fleur de peau, depuis un entre-deux : celui d’une vie construite en Occident, traversée en filigrane par les racines et les rythmes de l’Afrique australe. De cette tension naît un univers sonore singulier, où se rencontrent lignes de guitare héritées des traditions subsahariennes, basses enveloppantes et rythmes irrésistibles. Le résultat : une musique qui échappe aux genres, mais frappe toujours juste. Son écriture, intime et poétique, ouvre un espace de résonance, de connexion et d’émotion partagée.

Depuis ses débuts en 2022, OK Naledi connaît une ascension rapide sur la scène canadienne avec des passages remarqués dans les grands festivals, plusieurs nominations et l’appui du milieu artistique. Cette trajectoire s’affirme en 2023 avec la sélection du vidéoclip do you feel au Festival du film queer de Los Angeles, suivie du lancement de son premier album à guichets fermés au Centre national des Arts.

Musique sur le Canal
Le concert se déroulera sur le canal Rideau avec, comme point de départ, le quai situé près du CNA, sous le pont de la rue Rideau. Le bateau et les instrumentistes à son bord mettront le cap sur le parc Lansdowne, qu’ils atteindront environ 45 minutes plus tard, avant de revenir à leur point de départ. La traversée musicale durera environ 90 minutes.

Nos conseils pour profiter au mieux de Musique sur le Canal
Nous vous recommandons de vous installer le long du canal plutôt qu’au point de départ, au CNA. Vous pourrez ainsi entendre le bateau s’approcher, puis poursuivre sa route sur le canal. Apportez votre pique-nique, installez vos chaises pliantes et laissez la musique venir à vous!

Si vous préférez suivre le concert de près, enfourchez votre vélo. Vous aurez du mal à suivre le bateau à pied!

To call Laura Cortese a globetrotter would be to drastically understate her adventurous spirit. Her nature, as a musician, has always been to go where the wind takes her, settling into new ecosystems in which to adapt and grow roots until the breeze blows once more. In these travels, she has found a global network of collaborators–friends and mentors who have helped her forge bonds and grow mastery in many musical traditions, all of which she approaches with the same reverence and devotion that she felt when picking up a fiddle for the very first time as a young child.

Now, more than twenty years into her already impressive career, she makes her home in Ghent, Belgium, where she continues to do what she is best at: building musical community. Despite a global pandemic and rolling lockdowns, Laura Cortese created opportunities for local creatives to come together, sharing space and inspiration with each other in every gathering. In so doing, she was inspired to create a new solo show based on original American folk songs.

When Laura is alone on the stage, the audience becomes her band, stamping and clapping like a kick and snare drum, sometimes singing along sweetly and occasionally reminiscent of an enthusiastic gang vocal. She can be found performing internationally, exploring, and exalting in her passion for American roots music.

Qualifier Laura Cortese de globe-trotteuse reviendrait à minimiser considérablement son esprit d’aventure. En tant que musicienne, elle a toujours eu pour habitude de se laisser porter par le vent, s’installant dans de nouveaux écosystèmes où elle s’adapte et s’enracine jusqu’à ce que la brise souffle à nouveau. Au cours de ces voyages, elle s’est constitué un réseau mondial de collaborateurs – des amis et des mentors qui l’ont aidée à tisser des liens et à maîtriser de nombreuses traditions musicales, qu’elle aborde toutes avec le même respect et la même dévotion que ceux qu’elle ressentait lorsqu’elle a pris un violon pour la toute première fois, alors qu’elle était encore enfant.

Aujourd’hui, après plus de vingt ans d’une carrière déjà impressionnante, elle s’est installée à Gand, en Belgique, où elle continue de faire ce qu’elle fait le mieux : créer une communauté musicale. Malgré une pandémie mondiale et des confinements successifs, Laura Cortese a su créer des occasions pour les créatifs locaux de se réunir, partageant un espace et de l’inspiration à chaque rencontre. C’est ainsi qu’elle a eu l’idée de créer un nouveau spectacle solo basé sur des chansons folk américaines originales.

Lorsque Laura est seule sur scène, le public devient son groupe, tapant des pieds et applaudissant comme une grosse caisse et une caisse claire, chantant parfois en chœur avec douceur, ou bien formant un chœur enthousiaste. On peut la voir se produire à l’international, explorer et célébrer sa passion pour la musique roots américaine.

Micah Jondel DeShazer (he/they) is an award-winning actor, director, vocalist and conductor from the US, now based in Canada since 2021. Former AD of TACTICS Theatre Group, and founding AD of his new company, Unexpected Théâtre, he also works as a freelance director, performer, and educator. He has collaborated with many institutions across North America, notably: Shaw Festival, Virginia Rep, Childsplay, Hale Centre Theatre, GCTC, and serves as a board chair for Blackout Arts Society. He is deeply committed to developing and normalizing the voices of disabled and BIPOC creatives, and he mentors under Nina Lee Aquino, focusing on bold artistic leadership and direction. BIM (Benin International Musical) brings together five musician‑vocalists who share stories of the African continent and its histories through a powerful blend of sound and storytelling. Rooted in Beninese culture and the voodoo tradition, the group challenges common misconceptions, drawing on voodoo’s life‑affirming philosophy and its deep connection to land and community. Fusing rock and rap with traditional rhythms, BIM transforms each performance into a contemporary ritual.

After a debut album that took them around the world for more than 150 concerts, BIM returns in 2026 with Positive Vodoun, an ambitious new release.

Featuring driving rock anthems, incisive rap flows, rich vocal polyphonies, and hypnotic traditional rhythms, the album offers a vibrant portrait of contemporary Beninese music.

Musicians Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson direct the vibrations of the talharpa’s horsehair strings through effects, using alternative bowing and rhythm techniques. The mellow sighs of talharpa are paired with electronically amplified echoes, knocks, creaks and crackles. They create delightfully slinky songs about all possible random things around them. The lyrics combine many languages as well as Puuluup‘s made-up language, being mostly abstract and open to different interpretations. And they season their performances with unique choreography.

Puuluup has performed in around 40 countries and has received dozens of awards. They stand out with their infectious happiness and even made it to The European Song Contest Final.

Primary Colours is a Canadian piano trio that builds from the traditions of jazz, with influences from modern acts like Robert Glasper, GoGo Penguin, Tigran Hamasyan and Herbie Hancock. Blending acoustic and electric elements, the trio flows between head-nodding grooves and soulful melodies, discovering the unexpected through their improvisational virtuosity. The trio features Deniz Lim-Sersan on keys, Chris Pond on bass and José Hernandez García on drums.

Music on the Canal
The concert takes place on the Rideau Canal beginning near the NAC, under the Rideau Street Bridge. The musician-packed boat will arrive at Lansdowne Park approximately 45 minutes later and then return back. The sets run approximately 90 minutes.

Tips and tricks for enjoying Music on the Canal
We recommend you find a spot along the canal, not at the starting point at the NAC, where you will be able to hear the boat as it approaches and then continues down the canal. Pack a picnic, bring some folding chairs and let the music come to you!

If you want more than a glimpse, you can cycle along to keep up as the boat moves faster than walking pace.

Direct from the Brazilian Amazon, Suraras do Tapajós is Brazil’s first all-Indigenous women’s carimbó group, bringing to the stage a powerful celebration of ancestry, resistance, nature, and women’s leadership.

Formed in 2018, the group emerged as a bold expression of Indigenous women’s voices, echoing far beyond their territories through music, storytelling, and activism. Through original songs and beloved rhythms from the Amazon region, the Suraras sing about women’s rights, environmental protection, the defense of Indigenous territories, and the preservation of ancestral knowledge.

Their performances are vibrant, joyful, and deeply moving — blending the rhythms of carimbó, one of Pará’s most beloved cultural traditions, with the sounds, stories, and musicality of the forest. The stage becomes a living celebration of Indigenous women’s experiences, strength, and connection to the land.

Drawing inspiration from the emotional depth and anthemic sound, each set takes audiences on an emotional journey through themes of hope, resilience, love, and self-discovery. Bios

The Escapist Music (Arnaud Dagenais) is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter emerging artist from Montreal. The musician’s ability to create melodic pop/rock catchy songs, blended with a natural charismatic aura, allows him to reach the public and make his audience engage with his songs. The artist released four official singles: «Love Like Gravity», «All I Need», «Violence» and «Cigarettes & Diamonds». All were independently released and produced by the composer. His main inspirations are astronomy, intuition, physics, critical consciousness and social action. Since 2010, The Escapist Music performed more than 150 concerts across eastern Canada and the United States in cities like Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City and New York City. Arnaud also supports the youth of his Montreal community by working as a community worker. The engagement in his community is also directly reflected into his musical art as a great source of inspiration. Inside out of his career, Arnaud is assisting young artists by creating opportunities of creative development. Through popular education, empowerment, guidance and music production, he supports them to reach their full potential. In 2026, Arnaud will tour in Canada and collaborate with other artists to reach more people with his music.

Concerts in the Park is an annual summer series showcasing local talent from Eastern Ontario. While typically hosted at Robert Simpson Park's Gazebo Stage, this year will see a split between two parks as Robert Simpson Park undergoes a renovation. Performances run from 2:00pm-4:00pm for ten Sundays, beginning the week of our annual Priorpalooza Music Festival. Haunting, entrancing, breathtaking, beautiful – this open-eared, understatedly virtuosic performer is transforming and creating new definitions for Scottish folk in the 21st century.

Brìghde Chaimbeul is a leading purveyor of celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes – the bellows-blown, mellower and more emotive cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes – and she’s taken them to the global stage. A native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Skye, Brìghde roots her music in her language and culture. She rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music, but has since begun a journey to take the smallpipes into uncharted territory. She has devised a completely unique way of arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. She draws inspiration from the world of interconnected piping traditions, and her most recent album brings in influence from ambient, avant garde and electronic music. One can talk about Brìghde’s awards (BBC Young Folk Award; BBC Horizons Award; SAY Award nominee) and her wide array of collaborators (Caroline Polachek; Colin Stetson; Gruff Rhys; Aidan O'Rourke...) but after it all, her music speaks for itself.
